Our Cacao Source
We carefully select our cacao for its exceptional flavour profile while prioritizing ethical and sustainable sourcing. DAKAMA uses unsweetened cocoa produced by a family-owned Italian manufacturer with more than 75 years of expertise.
Cocoa is sourced through long-standing partnerships with farmer cooperatives across key cacao-growing regions, including Uganda in East Africa and Peru.
The flavour of a cacao bean is deeply shaped by the region and biome it grows in—cacao thrives in environments rich with shade, biodiversity, and balanced ecosystems. The best cacao farms naturally become havens for regional flora and fauna, and beans from each origin carry the imprint of their landscape in taste and texture.
We selected our cacao specifically for its flavour profile which pairs perfectly with naturally sweet dates and rich creaminess of cashews.
You can expect to find the following aromatic and palate notes prominently in our dark bars, and subtly in our mylk bars:
- Fresh, rich cocoa (of course!)
- Dried/red fruit tones (cherry, date, fig)
- Soft nutty/toasted grain notes
- a touch of barrel-aged, spiced wine
- No acidity or metallic edge
We have ensured our cacao comes from suppliers committed to rigorous ethical-sourcing standards, ensuring it’s grown under fair labour conditions and verified to be free from child or forced labour through internationally recognized third-party programs.
This approach reflects DAKAMA’s own values: respect for nature, transparency in ingredients, and care for the people behind the food we enjoy. By pairing ethically sourced cocoa with whole organic dates and plant-based ingredients, DAKAMA creates chocolate that is both deeply satisfying and consciously made.
Sweetened with Dates
All DAKAMA bars are naturally sweetened with organic dates, for a refined-sugar free indulgence. Dates provide naturally occurring sugars along with dietary fiber, antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals. Because the sugar in dates is bound within the fruit’s fiber matrix, it enters the bloodstream more gradually compared with isolated refined sugars, resulting in steadier energy levels. Avoiding refined sugars resets your palate and promotes your preference for natural, whole foods - and healthcare practitioners link less refined sugar to better oral and liver health, and more balanced energy levels overall.
Dairy Free
This 70% dark chocolate bar is completely free of dairy and its by-products. The smooth creaminess in DAKAMA dark chocolate comes from our 100% whole ground cacao, which includes the rich cacao butter.
